The Bates Update August 2013

Viva La Musica! I’m a little jet lagged but super excited to be back and playing some pretty amazing shows for you all this month. Why am I jet lagging? Well I was just in France in Bretagne (Britanny)  playing at the Liviou (Colors) Festival in this quaint village called Poullan sur Mer. There is a huge connection between the Celtic, Welsh and Briton cultures and the Brittany region is full of incredible music and musicians. I highly recommend checking out Jacky Molard‘s Quartet, his brother Patrick Molard and bassist Helene Labarriere. They are fantastic and deserve your attention. The main reason I was there was to play with Tony Hymas and JT Bates in trio and I have to say we really played one our best sets ever – full of energy and trust which let us stretch and get to some new spaces in the music. Among many special guests with us we got to perform with the legendary Evan Parker who is one of the most respected free improvisors in the world. Truly a wonderful and joyous occasion!

Looking forward to a great month of music making. Here are the highlights! Hope to see you at a show!

Chris Bates’ Red 5
Red 5 returns to action! My quintet has been a little quiet lately but we are excited to be playing for you this weekend. I’ve got some new songs you may not have heard and we’ll be playing all the tunes from my ‘New Hope’ album. Jt Bates, Brandon Wozniak, Zack Lozier, Chris Thomson (8/17) and special guest Nelson Devereaux (8/16). This is not a SAFE band. Come find out why!

Here’s some critical acclaim for Red 5 –
“One of the Twin Cities’ pre-eminent jazz bassists (from the Atlantis Quartet and Motion Poets, among others), Bates hardly played it safe for his first album as composer and bandleader. It ventures everywhere from Africa to New Orleans to Tatooine, and includes dazzling spots by trumpeter Zack Lozier and the drumming Bates brother, J.T.”

—Tom Surowicz, Minneapolis StarTribune, Twin Cities Critics Tally 2012

New Hope … is a stunning nine-song collection … charged with emotion and a heartfelt ambition to let the music be fulfilling in and of itself … startlingly good.”

—Natalie Gallagher, Gimme Noise (City Pages)

As always make sure to stop by www.chrisbatesmusic.net or the now functional www.doublebates.com for my entire performance schedule or to pick up my CD ‘New Hope’ if you haven’t already.
