July already???? Dang.

Hey everyone! It’s been a whirlwind here in Batesland with summer in full effect and I’m already thru Jazz Camp teaching season as well as the Twin Cities Jazz Fest! Highlights from the last month include teaching the Minneapolis Public Schools JAM (Jazz Around Minneapolis) Camp and my annual week of combo and improv at the Shell Lake Arts Center in Shell Lake, WI! Almost 100 kids were involved in this years camps and a truly powerful faculty of teachers from the Twin Cities, Wisconsin and Indiana. SO many great young students who give me hope for humanity. Many are playing at a much higher level than I was when I was their age – very inspiring! The faculty performances and teaching insights from my peers is another deep well that I draw from each summer – all these people are world class and dedicated to advancing the art form!

I was fortunate to be busy for the Jazz Fest this year as well and I had a fantastic time performing with the Brian Handeland Quartet, How Birds Work, Sam Militich and Dave Karr, Framework and the JC Sanford Quartet!  I’m very lucky indeed to be asked to play so much quality music with excellent artists.

Here’s what’s happening this week before I leave for a European tour with Davina and the Vagabonds! I’ve included those dates below as well – if you happen to be traveling or know anyone in the UK, France or Germany tell them to check out Davina!
