In a rare moment of continuity I’ll be playing 4 times at the Artists Quarter this week. I’ve played at the AQ at least once a month for the last 5-6 years. This month I’m there 7 nights with 5 different bands. The AQ is my favorite place to make music and I’ve been given many opportunities to play with a host of incredible artists thanks to owner / drummer Kenny Horst . He heard something in me that he liked and through his referral I’ve had the great fortune to play with internationally recognized artists: Mose Allison. Lee Konitz, Ira Sullivan, Eric Alexander, Greg Skaff, Ben Sidran, Bob Rockwell and Jim Snidero. Kenny has booked nearly every one of my project bands starting with Motion Poets and including Red Planet, Atlantis Quartet, Framework, Low Blows, Good Vibes and Red 5. Because of this I would say that the Artists Quarter is the place where I’ve grown the most as a professional musician.
My peers and I are truly lucky to be able to have a place to play that fosters creativity in music and gives us a platform to reach a wider audience. SO I would like to extend my thanks to everyone at the Artists Quarter. Our jazz community in MN would not be the same without Kenny Horst and the Artists Quarter. Please come out and support this great club and invest in locally sustainable creativity.
